I wanted to let you know about Dennis Hale and my new book - Keeping the Republic: A Defense of American Constitutionalism. Available from U.Kansas and Amazon. It has some Sam Beer in it - with a more spirited defense of Federalism.
If the White House really is leak proof, it would imply that there is a very tight circle of people controlling the agenda. It's hard to believe it's Biden, so the question is who?
I always like to read your take. Nice job. You drive me more to the middle every time. On Putin I would say a peace deal should happen when Ukraine says it should happen myself. If they want to keep going then I would like to support them until they figure they are ready to stop. I don't see Putin or an empire/authoritarian seeking state (and far too many Russians in the same empire/authoritarian mindset) stopping with just Ukraine if they can get it. On the whole idea of work being a key variable in America as we know it I would agree. Then, what happens if/when the AI revolution kicks up to the next level and all the folks who are working class, a good portion of the middle, and up upper middle class find themselves without jobs as a result? I figure culturally the USA I grew up in in the1950s and into the early 60s is long gone already no matter what the politicians do. Too late to change all that...it is a done deal. As a privileged child of the upper middle class I did not know any black people other than the house cleaner that came once a week nor did I have any black kids, not one, in my schools until college. Hispanics...same deal. Gender issues...well you know how that has changed. Gay issues same. The USA is going to have to learn how to financially support a large number of people who can't get work even if they are educated or even some who are professionals I figure. Culturally the 1950s of my childhood are and have been toast which as far as I am concerned is a good thing. The USA will have to learn to how to live together in a multicultural world with nasty climate changes happening as well. Let's just don't even get into how China or cooperation among autocratic countries might figure into the equation. Bottom line, from the vantage point of someone in their 70s things are looking really, really challenging for the future seems to me. Makes me think I personally had a good run and I am sorry to have to leave such a mess for the young people to deal with he says with a smile. End rant.
Hi Mickey
You are completely right about Douthat and Levin. Normally I agree with the but they are dead wrong about undoing welfare reform.
Best
Marc
Just came across this. Thanks! Hope you are well.

Our jobs are the only thing that stands between most of us and the gutter.
